[비례식 표현] The sooner, the better!

어제 비가 내리고 나서 밤에 갑자기 추워졌어요.

집에 오는데 너무 추워서 오들오들 떨면서 왔답니다.

한참 더울 때는 겨울이 올 것 같지 않더니, 이제는 그냥 겨울이 된 것 같은 느낌이에요. 저는 겨울이 좋습니다. :)

 

오늘은 비교급을 이용한 비례식 표현에 대해서 연습해 볼게요.

많을 수록 좋다. 이런 말 많이 하죠?

The sooner, the better.

  빠를수록 좋다

The more, the better.

  많을 수록 좋다.

The smaller, the better.

  작을수록 좋다

The cheaper, the better.

  쌀수록 더 좋다

The smaller, the better.

  작을수록 더 좋다.

 

사실 이런 표현들은 이미 많이 사용되고 있기 때문에 저렇게 짧게도 씁니다.

하지만, 문법적으로는 뭔가 빠진것 같죠?

<the 비교급 주어+동사~ , the 비교급 주어+동사~>

이런 구조를 갖고 있는거죠. 의미는 '~하면 할수록, 더 ~하다' 입니다.

따라서, 위의 표현들은 여기서 '주어+동사'가 생략된 형태죠.

The sooner it is, the better it is.

The more it is, the better it is.

The smaller it is, the better it is.

 

또한, <the 비교급 명사, the 비교급 명사> 패턴으로도 많이 씁니다.

The higher the risk, the higher the return.

  위험률이 높이질수록, 점점 더 많이 돌아온다.

 ** 이표현은 정말 유명하죠? 투자에서도 많이 쓰이는 표현이에요. 여기서도 주어, 동사는 생략됐답니다.

The better education, the greater the opportunities.

  교육이 더 좋아질수록, 더 많은 기회가 있다.

 

이렇게 짧게 표현할 수도 있지만, 내용이 구체적인 내용을 말하고 싶다면, 주어+동사가 들어가서 더 표현할 수 있겠죠. 좀 더 연습해볼까요?

  우리가 영어를 더 많이 공부할수록, 점점 더 어려워진다.

 ** '많다'는 표현은 more을 쓰시면 됩니다. difficult는 비교급이 more difficult가 됩니다.

 

A: Which cell phone do you prefer, this one, or that one?

    어떤 핸드폰이 더 좋아, 이거야? 저거야?

B: I definitely like that one. It has more functions.

    나는 당연히 저거지. 기능이 더 많잖아.

    The more functions it has, the better it is.

    기능이 많을수록, 더 낫지.

 

The 비교급 주어+동사 ~

이렇게 쓸 때, 목적어는 보통 the 비교급 + 목적어 를 많이 붙입니다.

The earlier we get there, the more time we'll have to prepare.

  우리가 거기 일찍 도착할수록, 우리는 준비할 시간이 더 많아.

The more work you do now, the less (work) it is to do later.

  지금 일을 많이 할수록, 나중에 할 일이 더 줄어.

The healthier you are, the happier you get.

  건강하면 건강할수록, 더 행복해져.

  더 연습할수록, 더 나아질거야.

  더 많이 공부할수록, 더 많이 배운다.

The less you worry, the more relexed you become.

  걱정을 적게할수록, 더 편안해질거야.

The more you exercise, the less weight you put on.

  더 많이 운동할수록, 덜 찔거야.

The more educated woman are, the later they will marry.

  여성들이 교육을 많이 받을수록, 더 늦게 결혼한다.

The older we get, the wiser we become.

  나이가 들수록, 더 현명해진다.

The more difficult the test is, the more students should study.

  시험이 어려울수록, 더 공부해야 한다.

The more the students study for the test, the higher their scores will be.

  학생들이 공부를 많이 할수록, 더 높든 점수가 될 거예요.

    어떤 커피 좋아요?

B: The stronger, the better.

    강할수록 더 좋아요.

 

A: When should I start?

    저 언제 시작할까요?

B: The earilier, the better.

    빠를수록 더 좋아요.

 

실생활에서 정말 많이 쓰입니다.

하지만, 외국인이 편안하게 쓰기에는 쉽지 않아요.

주어진 문장을 소리내서 읽고 외운다음에, 자기 문장을 많이 만들어 보는 것도 정말 중요합니다.

말하기 위한 공부라면 말을 해야돼요.

말하는 연습이 되지 않으면 영어 안 나옵니다.

힘들지만, 모두 화이팅하세요.

 

늘 느끼는거지만, 영어를 하면 더 많은 기회가 열립니다.

좀 더 넓고 새로운 세상으로 가 볼 수 있는 열쇠가 될 수 있어요.

하지만, 힘들어요. 그래서 더 가치가 있는거죠?
